Server Theory of Linking Mechanics

What Is linking within URU Chronicles? Read on to find out!
Linking is a quantum process of transporting a Living Object (and whatever may be carried through in one step) and placing it in another location, usually a different world. Easy enough to understand, but how does it work? Many theories assume that the Linking process breaks apart your physical molecules transmit them across time and space, and rematerialize them at a fixed time and place. This makes sense, but the question is how. Or rather, “How can we define Linking so that we understand it’s fundamental mechanics without going into quantum mechanics and techno-jargon babble-babble?” This is what I hope to cover with this Essay.

First, let's continue assuming that the Linking panels are event horizons into subspace wormholes. Easy enough to understand, but you surely must realize that this is impossible for our definition. Sure, we can dismiss the fundamental science required for it, but even so: Wormholes require event horizons at the beginning and the end for rematerialization. Linking Books only have one event horizon, and let's not forget the ability of the Bahro: The ability to link at will.

The Bahro can Link without wormholes and event horizons and can even link within the same age, a D'ni law that only Yeesha has been able to break with her writing. How can they do this? Clearly, our Wormhole theory cannot work, even when ignoring the Science behind it. So, let's create a new theory.

In D'ni History and Lore, the Multiverse is represented by a Tree, with many branches and limbs, each representing a new world, or several similar copies of the same world. This Tree is called "The Great Tree of Possibility," and it is fundamental to this new theory we are about to create.

For this new theory, let's imagine an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Roll Play Game) Server, WOW or Guild Wars or even Second Life, for example. These game servers have nodes and levels and such that are easily accessible to the different players via special hotspots (or rather, Flag Triggers) that tell the server to transport the Player to a new zone.

Now then, let's state that there exists a server residing within a universe, and that this "Game" contains the contents of OUR Multiverse. What's in the original Universe containing this server doesn't matter except for its creators and maintainers, the "Guardians" or Administrators, who likely inhabit a Dream like "Forum" that is the central hub of Data Transfer for this “Game”.

Now, thinking along the lines of OUR Multiverse as a Game Server, with each separate Universe, galaxy and unique solar system with its own little unique worlds all pre-rendered and modeled by the Game's creators, we can now assume that, as with any game, there are players, moderators, and other such creatures inside the world.

For the moment, let’s assume that for the Players there are two groups: The Players from outside our Multiverse and the Players within our Multiverse. These two groups are then split again into two more groups: "Full" Accounts and "Free" Accounts.

The Full Accounts are those whom, outside our Multiverse, would be the Paying players. They are those who can Link at will, manipulate the environments around them, and overall shape the full course of the game. The Free Accounts are those like you and I, simple creatures who can only Link using books, stones, and portals.

Now, the D'ni would also be considered to be in the "Free" Player Group, but of a higher level than the average human. The D'ni could write the books that would create bridges to these other worlds. And, essentially, as any game construct, the "Art" of writing Ages is simply just that: Game Coding.

Wait! Before you go on claiming that we are all A.I.'s and nothing significant, or that we are all being controlled by people from another universe, let me remind you that this is just an analogy: something that we can relate to, and understand better. I am not claiming that this IS a game construct we live in, but that it is simply something we can compare our universe to, in order to better understand how linking works.

Okay, then, why was I going on about players and such? This is why:

Now that we know the player types, we can simply state what Linking actually is. As I said above, any time we link, we are simply sending a server request for data transfer to another zone. For Free players using books, stones, and portals, the destinations are pre-set (in stone) to a specific location. Such game requests look like:

/Link AGENAME SpawnPoint#

This is what makes linking within the same age impossible in D’ni Law. Free accounts do not have the correct formatting for such a task unless given via certain objects (The Relto Book, for Example). Now, we know what a Free account’s request looks like, so what does a Full account's request look like?

/Relink AGENAME Coordinates: 0000-000-00

It looks like that. This is why Bahro and other "Full" Players can link at will. The "Re" prefix allows the ability of linking within the age. Essentially, this is a systematic warp command. So, in actuality, it would be called "/warp" instead of "/Relink", but the technical name is unnecessary at this point.

My main point and analogy has been understood regardless. In summary, Linking is simply stated as the following: When the server receives a request it pulls the Player from its "Link Out" spot, and transports the Player's Data to the "Link In" spot.

Thank you for taking your time to read this.
